Protein is made up of amino acids and all food has amino acids, some might just have more of one type than another. Amino acids are the building blocks that help repair cells and make new ones.1 This is why many people trying to build muscle focus on this nutrient mainly, although it is important to have a balance of all the macronutrients (Carbohydrates, Fats and Protein). Protein is indeed found in animal products but there is no need to eat animals in order to get protein. “Protein is found in plants like soy, beans, legumes, nut butters, and some grains (such as wheat germ and quinoa)” as stated in NIH’s MedlinePlus article.1
Many people have asked me how I got the idea to start my own company making nutritional bars. A portion of this story is in our “About Us” section on our website but I wanted to share the full version.I remember I was just outside of Boston pulling out of a grocery store after picking up a few things. I had this overwhelming feeling of hunger, but I was far from home and could not wait. (This tends to happen to me often, when I am hungry I cannot focus on anything else until my hunger is satisfied, sound familiar?) I did look at what the store had to offer in the form of a quick snack. But I did not end up purchasing anything because the quick and easy nutritional bar options did not have the right nutrition for me. The bars were either not vegan OR they were too high in sugar OR they had a crazy amount of calories OR they had some weird sounding stuff in them. I know from experience that these bars are easily eaten but leave me feeling sick because of the chemicals in them or I am hungry in the next hour. So I ended up buying tofu and eating it straight out of the container because that was the purest source of protein I could find in this store. It was at this point that I realized I need to do something about this dilemma.
I needed to make my own bar that was congruent with my needs and values. The creation of this bar was important to me so that others could enjoy it along with me without indigestion because of a milk allergy or soy sensitivity or headaches from chemicals.I wanted to be sure to use a pure plant-based protein, the lovely pea. Pea protein is the only type of protein powder that I use in my shakes and now in my Stella Bars. Let me give you a little more information about pea protein. The yellow pea provides many amino acids that help us get big and strong. The yellow pea is extracted from the legume to offer a great gluten-free protein source for almost everyone. People who cannot eat egg, milk or soy-derived protein due to allergies or lifestyle choices, this protein source is for you!Stella Bars is created from pea protein but also includes other ingredients that contain protein like quinoa and peanut butter! This bar can be used as a quick snack after a workout or to fight off the mid-morning or mid-afternoon slump. We did have a customer who said it pairs perfectly with coffee! So visit us at StellaBars.com to get more information. Can’t wait to hear from you!
